Attic Insulation Removal, Air Sealing & Re-Insulation

If your home feels too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, your attic is the first place to look. In eastern North Carolina, where summers are hot and humid and winter storms bring chilly winds, an under-insulated attic can waste energy and increase your utility bills every month of the year.

Swansboro Insulation removes old, failing insulation, seals air leaks, then installs fresh blown-in or batt insulation to the proper depth, so your home holds its temperature and your HVAC stops working overtime.

The Smart Upgrade That
Pays for Itself

of homes in our area are under-insulated.

If your home was built more than a decade ago, we recommend scheduling a FREE on-site inspection. There is a good chance heat is escaping in winter and pouring in all summer.

Re-insulating your attic is a fast, easy, energy-efficient improvement that most homeowners on the Crystal Coast can make. It costs far less than replacing your windows or installing a new HVAC system, and it starts working immediately.  The result is steadier room temperatures, fewer drafts, and a lower electric bill.

Our Process

Our Three-Step Attic Process

A complete attic upgrade can be fast and efficient while delivering lasting results.  We typically recommend one of two options.  The first option is to install R-38 blown-in fiberglass insulation over your existing insulation (if onsite inspection dictates this would suffice).  Our second option is a little more involved and typically can be done in one day unless damage and/or mold is found during the removal process.

Remove the Old Insulation

Old attic insulation often does more harm than good. Over time it becomes compressed, dirty, moisture-damaged, or contaminated by dust, pests, and mold, making it unable to provide adequate coverage. Removing it eliminates dust, allergens, rodent waste and odors, and exposes hidden problems like air leaks, moisture or roof leaks.

Air seal the attic and fix damages if needed

Next, we seal the gaps and openings where your conditioned air escapes and outside air sneaks in. Insulation performs best in an airtight space, and air sealing helps provide that environment for the new insulation to work optimally.

FAQs

Have a question? We’re here to help.

How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?

Take a look. If the insulation sits level with or below the tops of the floor joists, its likely you need more. Other signs include rooms that will not hold temperature, an HVAC that runs constantly, and power bills that climb.  The best way to know is to have a professional determine if for you.

For attics in eastern North Carolina we install  R-38 (approximately, 13 inches) fiberglass insulation.

When it is compressed, dirty, wet or contaminated, yes, and in older attics that is usually the case. Removal lets us air seal properly and gives the new insulation a clean, dry base. If your existing insulation is in good shape, we will tell you, and can do a simple blow over bringing it up to code.

For most under-insulated homes, yes, and noticeably. The attic is where the majority of heating and cooling escapes, so bringing it to R-38 with proper air sealing reduces how hard your HVAC is working.   Homeowners will feel the difference in comfort immediately and see it on the bill within the first full season.

Most full removal, air sealing and re-insulation jobs are typically 1-2 days.  Larger homes or attics with heavy contamination may require more time. We can provide a timeline upon the FREE onsite inspection.
