Floors & Crawlspace

Cold floors in winter, musty smells in summer, and humidity that never STOPS.  These issues typically start in the crawlspace. Ground moisture and outside air move up through the floor and into your living space, with your HVAC system paying the price.

Swansboro Insulation provides solutions.  We will inspect your existing space and give options to fix the problem. A proper boundary between your crawlspace and home is a great place to start.

of homes in our area are under-insulated.

If your house was built more than a decade ago, there is a good chance the crawlspace has bare ground, sagging insulation, or both. A FREE onsite inspection tells you exactly what is down there.

Covering the ground and insulating the floor costs far less than new windows or a new HVAC system, and it starts working immediately. Warmer floors in winter, less humidity in summer, and an HVAC system that stops fighting the crawlspace.

What We Do Under the House

Under-floor insulation

We install insulation between the floor joists, properly supported and fitted, so your floors stop pulling heat out of the rooms above them. The difference is easy to feel: warmer floors in winter and a more even temperature through the year.

VAPOR BARRIER - Ground coverage or full encapsulations

If a full crawlspace encapsulation is not in the budget, a thick vapor barrier over the ground, at least 10 to 12 mil, is the critical first step. It blocks ground moisture from rising, which protects your floor insulation, your framing and your indoor space above.

Signs Your Floors or

A musty or damp smell inside, especially in summer

FAQs

Have a question? We’re here to help.

Do I need full encapsulation or just a vapor barrier?

For many homes, a properly installed 10 to 12 mil vapor barrier solves the moisture problem at a fraction of the cost of full encapsulation. We will look at your crawlspace and tell you honestly which level your home actually needs.

If the floors are cold because the crawlspace below them is unconditioned and uninsulated, yes. Insulating between the joists puts a thermal break between your feet and the outside air.

Very often, yes. Air from the crawlspace moves upward into the home, carrying moisture and odors with it. A vapor barrier and sealed, insulated floor assembly cut that off at the source.

Usually the attic, because that is where the biggest energy losses are. However, if you have active moisture under the house, that needs to be addressed before it damages the existing insulation / framing. We will help you determine the best course of action.
